The bold words in my inbox spoke loudly to me: “Carey, Get a better job…” The email was an advertisement for a career search engine on whose hyperlink I did not click. But the message’s subject continued to ring in my thoughts hours after I had hit the delete button.
Ok – so this is old news: I am not satisfied with my job. All things considered, it’s not a terrible job. In fact, I would say it’s the best one I’ve ever had. But there is still this longing in my soul for a career that would not only help to heal the broken, but also to feed my spirit. The desire only gets stronger with each passing day. I also crave more quality time with my daughter, and I would love to find a career that would allow me to do just that.
The dreams tucked in my heart, as well as the talents and skills to make them reality are sacred gifts from God, and I don’t want to squander them. And yet I remain stuck in my current circumstances year after year, unsure of how to make a true breakthrough in this area.
Alright – let’s be honest – that’s not quite true. I know exactly how to have a breakthrough: I need to take a giant leap of faith. I need to put myself out there and risk failure, deep down knowing that I can’t possibly fail because God is on my side. I need to start following the path The Spirit has already revealed to me as my destiny.
Martha Beck said, “If you want to live peacefully, joyfully and abundantly, you must walk your talk.” I’m great at talking. Not so great at walking.
I need a proverbial (or literal??) kick in the pants. Anyone willing to do the honors?

Still Sick and a Possible Job Opportunity
The illness that found its way into our home two weeks ago is still wreaking havoc on our bodies. Poor Bianca sounds like she could cough up a lung at any minute, and Harry is still feeling achy. Yesterday, I was feeling so drained that I took a three hour nap and went to bed early – and I still had a terrible time getting out of bed this morning. I am struggling to stay awake at work. I literally feel like I am running on zero energy – and I’ve already had two Sparks today. My body hurts, my head hurts, my stomach hurts, and I just want to crawl back in bed and hide. How long will this yucky bug rear its ugly head? I just want us all to be better!
On a totally different topic, I applied for a job on Friday. I don’t want to divulge too much information or get too excited about it – because whenever I do, I end up jinxing myself. Let’s just say that I think it would be a good move for me.
~ The location is closer to home, which would cut down on my daily commute.
~ I would also be closer to Bianca during the day.
~ The closer commute would also mean less gas and no more tunnel tolls.
~ The salary range is right where I need it to be.
~ I would gain direct supervisory experience.
~ I would be able to help families in a tangible way.
~ I wouldn’t be chained to my desk all day.
~ Interactions with people would mainly be face-to-face, not on the phone.
~ There is a possibility of working three 12-hour days per week.
~ That schedule would allow me more time to spend with Bianca and more time to go to school.
Of course, I know it’s all in God’s hands, and ultimately I want His will for my life – no matter what the outcome. BUT if it would be as good a move as I think it could be, I pray that God sends His favor. (and calms down my butterfly-filled heart!)

Our Thoughts
This post is going to look very different from the one I was originally composing. I had a bit of a bad morning, complete with an anxiety attack about coming into work. I was on my fifth “woe is me – I hate my job and I can’t do anything about it” paragraph when God nudged me over to my friend Chelle’s blog. In the middle of her Thursday’s Thoughts list, there was this bullet:
• Last week, I reconnected with an old friend. While it was nice to hear her voice, every single conversation we had involved her complaining about someone or something. After multiple days of this, I finally said, "Well, you can keep complaining and remain where you are, or you can make some changes and decide to do things differently." Needless to say, I haven't heard from her since. Our thoughts our powerful, and if we fill ourselves with negativity, and spew only negativity, well friends, our lives will become as such. We reap what we sow friends.
Yeah, I was just a little convicted. Philippians 4:8 popped right into my head at that moment: Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.
Chelle is absolutely right. If we fill ourselves with negative thoughts, our lives will become as such. I have been thinking negatively about my job pretty much since Day 1. I started at UMB in the middle of August 2008. In September 2008, I wrote in my journal about how unhappy I was going to be. “This job isn’t my destiny. I was created for so much more.” Well, the unhappiness has definitely come to pass. I have had more anxiety attacks and days where I simply could not function at this job than from all my previous ones combined. (ok – Allstate may be the exception!)
So now the question becomes: will I keep complaining and remain where I am? Or will I make some changes and decide to do things differently?
Obviously – the latter is the better option. I just wish I knew how to change. I feel like I have been stuck in this area for eight years because I don’t know how to move. I’ve said it before, but I need help. I realize my first attempt at working with a life coach didn’t go so well, but maybe I should try to find someone local with whom I can sit down face to face. I really do want to change. I just need help formulating an action plan on how to achieve it.
Hmmm….I just realized that once I finally begin the Me Project, I should concentrate on making an action plan for my career.

Work Update
As I mentioned a few posts ago, things at work are looking up. My supervisor returned to the office on Monday. She had a long chat with me, telling me that she wanted to keep me happy. She's impressed with the way I handled everything in her absence. She's wants me to have more autonomy in my job and wants my input on how to keep things running smoothly in the office.
She also let me have my title change now instead of Sepetmeber (though no money came along with it), and if they ever decide to fill Sheila's position (she has been gone for over a year now), that person will be my direct report. I can then add "supervisory experience" to my resume. Woo hoo! So anyway, I am no longer an Administrative Assistant; I am now a Program Coordinator. Much better!
The only downside is my work load has not seemed to ease up at all since my supervisor returned. If anything, it seems like my task list has gotten longer. I was in the office from 8 AM to 6:30 PM yesterday, and I am staying late again today. I really wish my life wasn't so out of balance!!

What a Man of Integrity!!
This morning I received an email from my life coach Joel. It read, "During the course of our conversation, and reflecting on it afterward, I realized that my coaching may not be a good fit for your current needs. I will have Jay put a check in the mail for you today." All I can say is "Wow!"
I think a lot of other coaches would have ignored the fact that we didn't quite mesh, just because I was a paying customer. This man is obviously different. He is full of integrity. He is not only talking the Christian talk, he is living the life. What a wonderful man!
What this experience has shown me is: I already have the answers inside. I already know who I am. I already know what my passions are. I already have a vision for my future career. I don't need help in that area. I really just need help formulating an action plan.
Last year, my friend Carolyn suggested that I start making contact with wellness professionals in the Baltimore area. I reached out to a total of....ZERO. Last year was one of the darkest times of my life. But I am in a much better place this year. And I am more ready than ever for my breakthrough. Now I just have to get my butt in motion and start taking baby steps. That's the only way I am going to get un-stuck.

Pregnant with Vision
Last night I couldn't sleep. My mind was swarming with ideas for Circle's End. God has given me a new vision that is much bigger than the one I originally conceived. I was so excited by some of the things I saw that I was ready to contact a graphic designer this morning to get a quote for commissioning a logo design. I wanted to have something tangible to hold onto - something that would confirm that I have definitely made a breakthrough in my career.
This morning, I was nudged by the Spirit to Google "Circle's End." Wow...I didn't realize how unoriginal the name was. It is the name of a Harry Potter book, the name of a band, the name of a movie, the name of a farm, the name of a song, the name of a novel, the name of a video game...and that is most likely not an exhaustive list. Needless to say, I was taken a bit back. I think a new name will be necessary.
Despite that little hiccup, I am more excited than ever about my soon-to-be born organization. They say that everything happens in God's perfect timing, and I am starting to believe it more than ever. Last year, while in New York for a meeting, I attempted to write a business plan for the then-Circle's End. I was having so much trouble. Maybe it was the excess stress I was feeling from work. Maybe it was the post-partum depression that had its claws in me. Maybe it was simply not the time. In the next couple of weeks, I am going to tackle that business plan again - and I have a feeling it will all come together nicely.

I Need Help
It's no secret that I'm not happy at my job. I know that I need to make a change. But I find myself facing a bit of a dilemma. I have been job searching; however, most of the jobs I am qualified for are administrative in nature. These are the jobs I know I would be able to get. BUT I don't want to take on another administrative job just to escape my current one. Otherwise, I will find myself in the same exact position another year or two down the road. I know this is true because I have been in administrative jobs since I graduated from college, and I am nowhere near being satisfied.
I want a TRUE BREAKTHROUGH in my career. I want to find a job that helps feed my soul. I want to make a difference in people's lives. I want to gain a sense of peace and satisfaction from my work. I want to feel more joyful and less anxiety when I go to work. I want to work hard, make good money, occasionally get overwhelmed, but in general, truly love what I do. It would also be ideal if I can put to use the two Master's degrees I already have, as opposed to attending school yet again. I know that such a job exists. I just don't know how to find it.
I'm starting to realize that I can't get through this process alone. I need help. I have been praying for so long, and I am still no closer to any answers. I think I need to see a life coach or a career coach - preferably a Christian one. Someone who can help me find concrete answers and help me formulate an action plan for transitioning my career. But how do I go about finding such a person?
I spend so much time worrying about my job. If that area of my life could be worked out, I know I would be much more pleasant to be around, more confident, more peaceful, and more powerful. Confession: I am dreading Monday
On Monday, I go back to work. It will be quite a while until I get another break - probably in the spring. Part of me is simply dreading it. I truly wish I didn't have to go back. I wish I could make a fresh start in a career that suits me better.
Last week, I received a letter granting me provisional acceptance into the Massage Therapy program at CCBC. As long as I earn a 'C' or better in Anatomy & Physiology, I'm in. I had to turn down the acceptance, though. Number 1, I was accepted for a spring start - which is solely a day-time program. Number 2, I never finished A&P. Number 3, I realized that my desire to have more children is bigger than my desire to attend school.
I thought I was at peace with the decision, so I was a bit surprised when I started crying watching a commercial for the Baltimore School of Massage. There was just a real longing in my soul as I felt the possibility of becoming a massage therapist gently slipping away.
If I had only one wish, I would quit my job and attend the BSOM massage program full time. I could be finished in as little as 7 months! Wouldn't that be amazing?!?
Sadly, we're not in a financial situation that would allow me to do that. With the choices we've made, we can't live on Harry's salary alone. But I feel in the pit of my stomach that something needs to change. I only wish I knew where to go from here.
All I can do is give my career over to the Lord. He knows the plans He has for me. Plans to prosper me and not harm me. I trust He has everything under control. I just wish He would show me where to go.

Back to the Grind
I came into work today. Our school is closed, so it's pretty much a ghost town here. I had to work because, although I am stationed at UMB, I am technically an HHMI employee, so I follow a different vacation schedule than my co-workers. Yesterday, I decided to work from home. After all, I didn't want to be the only person in my building. (Even the security guards and housekeeping staff are on vacation). That turned out to be a mistake. I didn't get a thing done. I used to work from home a lot when Bianca was younger, and I never had any problems. Now that she is running all over the place, it's not as easy.
Because I am under grant deadline, I had to bite the bullet and come into work today. Even though it's bothered me the past two years, today, it feels quite nice being the only one here. I have been super productive this morning. At this point, I have one slight budget issue to fix, and I need to have a meeting with one of the investigators on Monday to get some more of the technical details, but after that, it should be smooth sailing! Considering how awful my last grant was, this one feels like a walk in the park!
And since my supervisor is on maternity leave, this one is solely in my hands. I finally feel like I'm getting the chance to prove myself, and it feels good. Everything feels like it is under control. We should not only be able to submit our proposal on time, we should be able to submit early! Again, this is complete opposite of our last application. I am hardly stressing at all. Praise God!
I have a few more easy tasks to complete, and then I'm calling it a day. Bianca and I will be going to Harry's Christmas tournament tonight. His game isn't until 7:30 PM, though, so it's going to be a long night for our Little One. (Who am I kidding? It's going to be a long night for me, too!)
For about a month now, Bianca has been having trouble sleeping. Of course, that means Mommy has also had trouble sleeping. Last night, though, was wonderful. I had a terrible headache, so Harry told me to go to bed early. At 8:00 PM, both Bianca and I went to bed. She cried for about 5 minutes, then she fell asleep. I was out not much longer. She didn't make any noise again until 4:40 this morning! I was so happy! My headache went away, and I was able to get over 8 hours of constant sleep! Such a HUGE blessing!
Today, my sticky note from God says, "Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness. Psalm 112:4." It's making me quite giddy because it's reiterating the message my pastor gave on Christmas. Yes, 2011 is going to be my Breakthrough year, but it's only because Jesus is lighting the way. It is simply wonderful having something so tangible to hold onto!

The Answer
And just like that, my best friend and co-pilot has an answer for me!
"Because you havent always followed your heart when it comes to your job and now is the time for you to go after a job that follows your heart and your skills and i believe God will open the door for right opportunties but he needs you to walk through a door first. I think the massage was a glimpse of how he can make your dreams a reality earlier than you expect when you have made it a point to not only conceive perceive it but take action... he needs you to make a move so he can make a move."
If I haven't mentioned lately how much I love Stephanie, I really, really do. She stands up in prayer for me when I don't have the strength to do it on my own. She was willing to travel hundreds of miles to see me when I was at my lowest point. And she always knows the perfect thing to say when I need it the most. Everyone needs a Steph in their lives!!

Anywhere But Here
It's almost noon. I have been sitting at my desk since 8:00 this morning. I literally have done nothing. Not one thing. I feel like absolute crap. My head hurts, my stomach hurts, and I'm nauseous. I went to bed before 9:00 last night, and I overslept this morning. I don't know what's wrong with me. I just feel absolutely spent. And this is after a four-day stress-free weekend.
I know there are people out there who would love to have my job. I know I should be singing praises that I even HAVE a job in this tough economy. But I think my job is literally making me sick. Even one of my co-workers pointed out the other day, "You never feel good." And it's true. When I'm at work, I feel awful. And I often find myself wishing I was anywhere but here.
2010 was supposed to be my year of action. Granted - I did take some baby steps. But guess what? I didn't get anywhere. I'm still stuck in the same place I was when I started. It looks like taking baby steps got me nowhere. : (
I am so desperate to be in a career where I can love and serve others and help them to heal. I need to know I'm making a difference. I need to know that my 8+ hours a day at work aren't being wasted. When will the breakthrough happen? When will lasting change take place? When will I finally experience true fulfillment in my career because I am also living out my life's purpose?
I am intelligent, highly educated, and a hard worker. I have been "successful" at every job I've ever had. I am well-liked. Can somebody please explain to me why I have had such a terrible time in this area of my life?

I am intelligent, highly educated, and a hard worker. I have been "successful" at every job I've ever had. I am well-liked. Can somebody please explain to me why I have had such a terrible time in this area of my life?
I need a BREAKTHROUGH!!!!

My Job
I was reading through my older blog posts this morning, and I realized that I never gave an update on my job. As you know, I was offered the VTEU position, and I originally accepted it. The last post I wrote on the subject had me waiting to hear back from H.R. about what my final salary would be. I never got a chance to hear.
Had I not been offered the job, the original expectation was that I was going to be Acting Program Manager of the Malaria Section starting in November, when my supervisor went out on maternity leave. She was going to be out for 12 weeks.
God had other plans. The same day I was going to break the news about my new job to my boss, my supervisor went out on emergency bed rest. (This was back in August) I was honest with my boss, telling him that I was conflicted. On one hand, I was presented with a great opportunity that I didn't want to pass up. On the other hand, I didn't want to abandon him and the Malaria Section during a difficult time.
He ended up giving me an offer to stay. He was aware that I would be making $48,000 as the new VTEU Coordinator. He offered to give me $45,000 starting immediately, and in 6 months, as long as I handled the duties of Acting Program Manager well, I would be promoted and make $50,000. I decided to stay, and I told our Department Administrator that I couldn't accept the Coordinator position.
The very next day, my boss said, "I offered you something we can't actually do. We can't promote you 6 months from now. It will have to be in September 2011." It was too late to do anything because I had already declined the other offer. Definitely a little disappointing.
But to summarize....I am still an Administrative Assistant in the Malaria Section. I am also Acting Program Manager, and will continue to be at least until January. One of my new friends in the CVD is helping me to update my resume. Right now, I am selling myself as an Administrative Assistant. I need to be selling myself more as a Manager. Otherwise, I won't be getting any requests for interviews for management positions.
Hopefully this post explains why I have said recently that I will begin job searching soon. Because I am still exactly where I've been for the past two years. Nothing has changed.
